Mesozoic and Cenozoic Carbonates of the Neo-Tethys, Naples – EVENT CLOSED
Co-chairs: Raffaele Di Cuia (GEPlan Consulting), Mariano Parente (University of Naples Federico II)
Conference: 25-26 March 2014, Naples, Italy
Pre-conference field trip (one day) : 24th March 2014 – SOLD OUT
Post-conference field trip (one day) : 27th March 2014 – SOLD OUT
Post-conference field trip (two day) : 28th-29th March 2014 – SOLD OUT
This event will take place from the 25-26 March 2014 in the beautiful city of Naples, located at the doors of the southern Apennines, a carbonate dominated fold-and-thrust belt where the largest onshore Europe oil complex was discovered in the early 90’s (the Val d’Agri and Tempa Rossa oilfields). The reservoir in these fields is held in Mesozoic and Cenozoic carbonate sequences.
After decades of intensive research on carbonate rocks and depositional systems, the 3D characterization and modeling of carbonate reservoirs still pose great challenges. Effective solutions to these challenges would carry huge economic impact in terms of appropriate field development plans of HC discoveries, additional recovery (EOR and IOR) from mature carbonate reservoirs and of successful exploration and development of new carbonate plays.
This conference will bring together geoscientists from the oil industry and the academy to share knowledge and lessons learned in different fields and to discuss the plans for future research (by Aaron ). The session themes will honor the wide spectrum of stratigraphic, diagenetic and structural heterogeneity of carbonate reservoirs. The regional focus will be on Mesozoic and Cenozoic carbonates of the Neo-Tethys Ocean, which host some of the world largest oil and gas accumulations in the Mediterranean, North African and Middle East regions.
The venue of the conference is strategically positioned with respect to the southern Apennines fold-and-thrust belt, which is largely made of carbonate rocks. Many concepts relevant for the exploration of carbonate plays can be beautifully illustrated by outcrop analogues in the southern Apennines. Fractured carbonates, dolomitization types and styles and the geology of the Val D’Agri carbonate-reservoir oilfields will be the topics of pre- and post-conference field trips.
Planned technical sessions
- Regional facies distribution in the Meso-Cenozoic carbonate platforms of the Neo-Tethys Ocean
- Intraplatform basins and source rocks of carbonate petroleum systems
- Dolomitization processes and dolomitized reservoirs
- High resolution stratigraphy of carbonate platforms: old and new tools
- Petrophysics of carbonate reservoirs
- Old and new petroleum plays in Mesozoic and Cenozoic carbonates
- Tectonic vs climatic control on carbonate depositional systems
- Mechanical stratigraphy and fracture behavior of carbonates
- Carbonate-dominated fold-and-thrust belts
- Extensional tectonics and geological setting of pre-, syn- and post-rift carbonate successions
- Carbonate successions involved in strike-slip tectonics
- New advances in Virtual Outcrop Models for visualization of geological objects
Who should attend? This event should be attended by geoscientists and engineers from the oil and gas industry working on exploration and development of carbonate reservoirs. Participation by academic researchers and graduate students working on carbonates is also most welcome.
